Stability and Relapse: A Major Challenge in Orthodontic Treatment Outcome
Abstract
Evaluation of treatment results and long-term post-retention assessment of orthodontically treated malocclusions has been of interest for several decades. This article examined the some of the challenges militating against orthodontic stability including causes of relapse during treatment and to provide guidelines to minimize it. A number of possible factors in the stability and relapse of apparently s uccessful orthodontic treatment were identified. It is imperative that orthodontic practitioners are aware of occlusal changes that may occur many years after treatment as well as potential benefit of orthodontic treatment. Clinical guidelines to minimize failures of orthodontic treatment outcomes were highlighted.
