The Pattern of Presentation of Malocclusion at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, Nigeria
Abstract
Background: Knowledge about the distribution of different malocclusions, their prevalence and the need for treatment could be of assistance to orthodontic practitioners in understanding the treatment planning including manpower needed in orthodontics. This retrospective study was therefore carried out to determine the pattern of malocclusion traits reported at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, Nigeria. Methods: The sample included records of patients who visited the orthodontic unit of dental and mrodllofacial surgery department of Aminu Kano Teaching hospital, Kano, Nigeria during the period of June 2011 to June 2015 with chief complaint of not liking the arrangement of their teeth. Assessments were done using Angle's classification, overbite, overjet, spacing, crowding, cross bite, scissors bite and treatment plan were no.. The subdivisions of Angle's class II 8c III were not considered during this study. The data was anonymously analysed using SPSS version 17 soft-ware. Descriptive statistics were used to find the means and standard deviations. Rau. A total of 103 patients with male predominance were seen during the period under review with a mean age of 13.4 years and sta ncland deviation of 5.0 years. Angles classes I, II and III accounted for 78%,17% and 5% respectively. Fixed orthodontic appliance was indicated in the majority of cases. Conclusion: The pattern of malocclusion is not necessarily different from other hospitals in Nigeria. Angle, lass 1 malocclusion the most prevalent and fixed orthodontic treatmen t was required in most cases.
